The Overlook Masonic Health Center began with a simple gift of $1000. Donated in 1904 by the Mount Hope Masonic Lodge of Fall River, it was earmarked to establish the first Masonic home for the aging. In 1908, the money (along with additional donations) was used to purchase a "nearly new" 50-room hotel in Charlton – a property known as The Overlook. It was not until three years later that the fund had grown large enough that the Masonic Home could open. On May 25, 1911 the Masonic Home was opened and dedicated in Charlton, Massachusetts. The Home’s first resident, George M. Taylor of Worcester age 89, arrived on October 4. By 1914, the Home was almost near full capacity with 48 residents.

In 2001, Masonic Health System was established to continue the Masonic tradition of caring through the creation of a fully integrated health care continuum. A year later, construction for the new Overlook Masonic Health Center was underway and our new 112 private room skilled nursing facility opened in October of 2003. Two years later in February 2005, the 69 private room enhanced living center, which offers post-acute care and rehabilitative services, was completed. The independent living apartments and cottages opened on May 1, 2006 to its first residents.
The new state-of-the-art buildings that have been added over the few years, compliment the gracious buildings from a century ago. Our long tradition of personalized service and renovations to the campus over the years is a result of, and a tribute to, Masons from all over Massachusetts. As a result of the renovations, The Overlook now stands as a wonderful synthesis of historical elegance and contemporary comfort.
